When’s the best time to visit?

That’s easy: first thing in the morning or later in the evening. This is when Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is at its quietest and the rooftop views are at their most impressive. Why not map out the rest of your day from the top of the tower, watch the sun go down or see the city lit up after dark, it really is spectacular. Give yourself at least two hours for your visit.
You’ll need it.

When are the attractions open?

Our World of Illusions is open all day, and well into the evening. Take as long as you like exploring every curious corner.

Visiting in August

From 4 – 27 August 2022, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will be taking place at Edinburgh Castle. During this period, access to Castlehill, including Camera Obscura, will be restricted from 5pm Mon-Fri and from 4pm Sat. There are no access restrictions on Sundays. Access to Camera Obscura will be from Castlehill (the top section of the Royal Mile, just beyond Lawnmarket) only. Please allow extra time (10-15 min) to arrive for your entry slot as the street will be busy. There will be barriers at the entrance to Castlehill. Tattoo ushers and our staff will be there to welcome you. Our staff will be by the barriers, on the right hand side of the street, close to ‘The Ensign Ewart’ bar. You may be asked to show your Camera Obscura admissions ticket or confirmation email. If you don’t have your ticket or are purchasing one on the door, our staff will be there to help. You will be given access via a special ‘hospitality lane’ on the right hand side of the street, all the way to our door.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your visit please call us on 0131 226 3709.
