From toddler to teenager to grandparents all families are welcome and we have a wide variety of hands-on exhibits for everyone to enjoy.

We have hours of fun for all the family waiting for you to enjoy in the centre of Edinburgh. Young babies are welcome and will love the sights and sounds of our World of Illusions.

We have a buggy park in our foyer where you can leave your buggy for the duration of your visit as our attractions are not suitable for pushchairs and we do not have a lift. Please enter through the Courtyard entrance. There are 98 steps in total to reach the top of the building, covering 6 floors. We have benches on every level and you can borrow one of our brilliant baby carriers – there’s no charge. Baby carriers are cleaned and sanitised after each use. If you would like to reserve one in advance please contact us. The minimum weight required for use is 3.5kg (8lbs) and 53cm (21 inches) in height. The maximum weight is 14.5kg (32 lbs).

We have baby changing facilities in our male and female toilets, and we have nappies available if you need them; just ask a member of staff. The hand dryers in the toilets are quite loud so please be aware if you are using these facilities.

We proudly support breastfeeding on our premises as part of the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland scheme. Whilst we do not have a dedicated, discreet feeding area we do have benches on every level you are welcome to use. Our staff will be happy to direct you to a seating area and to provide water on request while you feed your infant.

Pregnant women are welcome to enjoy the attraction at their own pace, there is no time limit to your visit. Be aware that we only have stairs to access six floors, but seating is available on each floor. Unexpected mirrors, patterns and moving images may cause motion sickness.

Children aged 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult during their visit. An adult qualifies as anyone aged 16 and over.

Pets welcome! We understand that our furry friends are part of the family, and are a pet-friendly attraction. We can provide water bowls you can take around with you to maintain your pet's comfort and wellbeing and offer all our four legged visitors a treat of a dog or cat biscuit on arrival. Dogs must be on a short leash at all times and well behaved during their visit. Your dog may not enjoy visiting us at peak times. Weekends and school holidays are generally busy, but we tend to be quieter first thing in the morning or later in the evening (though this cannot be guaranteed). Our Vortex Tunnel exhibit has a metal grid walkway unsuitable for little paws. We recommend carrying small animals across or bypassing it. Cats must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times. We recommend calling ahead to let us know you're bringing your cat.

Family FAQs

Is Camera Obscura suitable for children?

Yes! Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is designed to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Families can explore over 100 interactive exhibits, including optical illusions, hands-on experiences, light displays and mind-bending puzzles. Whether you're visiting with toddlers, school-age children or teenagers, there's something for everyone to discover.

What age is Camera Obscura best for?

There's no "best" age. Younger children enjoy the colourful visual effects, mirrors and interactive exhibits, while older children, teenagers and adults love the puzzles, illusions and photography opportunities. It's one of the few attractions that genuinely entertains the whole family together.

Is Camera Obscura good for toddlers and preschool children?

Yes. Many of our youngest visitors love exploring the mirror rooms, giant kaleidoscope, light displays and sensory experiences. While some exhibits are more suited to older children, toddlers enjoy discovering new sights, sounds and surprises throughout the attraction.

What can children do at Camera Obscura?

Children can explore five floors filled with over 100 interactive exhibits, including optical illusions, perspective tricks, mirror experiences, puzzles and hands-on displays. Almost every exhibit encourages children to interact, experiment and discover something unexpected.

Is Camera Obscura educational?

Yes. Our exhibits introduce ideas about light, perception, science, psychology and visual illusion through play and exploration. It's a fun learning experience where children are encouraged to question what they see while having fun.

How long should we allow for our visit?

Most families spend around 2 hours exploring, although many choose to stay longer. Your ticket is valid all day, so you're welcome to leave and return later if you'd like to get refreshments, have a break or explore Edinburgh before coming back.

Is Camera Obscura a good attraction for rainy days in Edinburgh?

Definitely. As a mostly indoor attraction, Camera Obscura is one of Edinburgh's favourite family activities when the weather isn't at its best. You'll stay warm and dry while enjoying five floors packed with interactive experiences. The Rooftop Rerrace remains open whatever the weather, you can watch the haar or see Edinburgh sparkle in the rain, we even provide umbrellas!

Where is Camera Obscura located?

You'll find us beside Edinburgh Castle at the top of the Royal Mile, making us easy to include as part of a family day exploring Edinburgh's historic Old Town.

Do children under 5 need a ticket?

Children under 5 visit free of charge, but they still need a ticket so we can manage visitor numbers. Please include every member of your group when booking online.

Can we bring a buggy or pushchair?

Buggies and pushchairs need to be left in our buggy parking area in our admissions foyer. As we're housed in a historic building with multiple floors and only stairs to access each area. We recommend using a baby carrier where possible, which you can borrow for free from us, and our team will be happy to advise when you arrive for your visit.

Are there baby changing facilities and can I breastfeed?

Yes. Baby changing facilities are available in all our toilet facilities, and breastfeeding is welcome throughout the attraction. If you'd prefer a quieter place to feed your baby we have a Quiet Space on Floor 4, simply ask a member of our team and we'll be happy to help.

Can we take photos?

Absolutely! Photography is encouraged throughout the attraction, and many of our exhibits create brilliant opportunities for memorable family photos. Don't forget to share your favourites with us on social media.

Are family tickets available?

As family groups consist of many variations, we don't currently offer a family ticket, to allow inclusivity to all our visitors. Tickets are individually priced.

Is Camera Obscura worth visiting with children?

We think so! Camera Obscura has been delighting families for generations and is consistently rated as one of Edinburgh's top visitor attractions. With interactive exhibits, unforgettable illusions and experiences that appeal to all ages, it's a place where the whole family can laugh, learn and discover together.

Is Camera Obscura suitable for teenagers?

Absolutely. Teenagers often enjoy the illusion rooms, puzzles, photography opportunities and exhibits that challenge their perception. Many families find it's one of the few attractions that genuinely appeals to children, teens and adults alike.

Can children touch the exhibits?

Most of our exhibits are designed to be interactive and hands-on. We encourage visitors to get involved, explore and experience the illusions for themselves.

Is Camera Obscura a good attraction for school holidays?

Yes. Camera Obscura is one of Edinburgh's most popular family attractions during school holidays, offering a fun indoor experience that appeals to a wide range of ages and interests. We do get busy at these times, and recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred entry date and time.

What should children wear to Camera Obscura?

There's no special dress code. Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended as families often spend a couple of hours exploring the attraction's multiple floors.

What makes Camera Obscura different from other family attractions?

Camera Obscura combines history, science, optical illusions and hands-on fun in one unique attraction. Rather than simply observing exhibits, visitors actively participate in the experiences, making it memorable for children and adults alike.
