Doors Open Day 2026

 

We’re delighted to be taking part in Edinburgh Doors Open Days 2026, opening up our historic attraction as part of Scotland’s largest free heritage festival.

 

Taking place across Edinburgh on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2026, Doors Open Days gives visitors the chance to explore fascinating buildings, discover local stories and see the city from a different perspective.

 

Sitting at the top of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is Edinburgh’s oldest purpose-built visitor attraction. Our story on Castlehill dates back to 1853, and today visitors can still experience a demonstration of our historic Victorian Camera Obscura alongside five floors of interactive exhibits and panoramic rooftop views.

 

We’ve been thrilled by the response to our first Doors Open Days appearance. Our free Doors Open Days ticket allocation for 26 and 27 September is now sold out.

 

But if you missed out, there are still two great ways for Edinburgh residents to visit us for less throughout September.

 

If you live in an EH postcode, you can still enjoy Camera Obscura throughout September with our Resident Rate, giving you 20% off admission Sunday-Friday. Simply use the code RESIDENTRATE20 when booking online and bring proof of your EH postcode when you visit.

 

We’re also Forever Edinburgh’s Legend of the Month for September 2026. Edinburgh residents can receive one free child ticket with each full-paying adult, Sunday-Friday, using the code EHREWARD26 when booking online.

This year’s Doors Open Days theme is Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine – and it has a particularly strong connection to Camera Obscura.

 

Our story began with pioneering entrepreneur Maria Short, who established her observatory on Castlehill in 1853. Later, influential town planner, ecologist and educator Patrick Geddes transformed the building into his famous Outlook Tower, using the Camera Obscura to help people understand the relationship between Edinburgh, its communities and the wider world.

 

More than 170 years later, that story is still unfolding. We continue to revive our optical heritage through live demonstrations of the Victorian Camera Obscura, while reimagining Geddes’ Outlook Tower as a place of curiosity, discovery and hands-on learning for modern audiences. Behind the scenes, we also preserve our historic buildings and repair, reuse and repurpose many of our exhibits to help keep this unusual piece of Edinburgh heritage alive for future generations.

 

Just a short walk down the Royal Mile, the Advocates Library in Parliament House is opening on Saturday 26 September. Founded in 1689, this remarkable working law library is normally closed to the public, with free guided tours available on the day on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Even closer to us, The Scotch Whisky Experience is taking part on Sunday 27 September. Its building was formerly Castlehill School, offering another glimpse into the changing story of the buildings at the very top of the Royal Mile.

 

You can also head to the National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge on Sunday, where collections include treasures connected with figures including Mary, Queen of Scots, Robert Burns and Charles Darwin.
